On 8th August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi started the Quit India Movement at Gowalia Tank Maidan. The place is also known as August Kranti Maidan.
Post this speech, Gandhiji was imprisoned at Aga Khan Palace, Pune, and most other leaders also got arrested. That, however, did not stop the movement. New leaders like Aruna Asaf Ali came forward. The British government declared the Indian National Congress (INC) to be an unlawful association. Later in 1944, Gandhiji was released for health reasons.
