On 8th August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi started the Quit India Movement at Gowalia Tank Maidan. The place is also known as August Kranti Maidan.
Post this speech, Gandhiji was imprisoned at Aga Khan Palace, Pune, and most other leaders also got arrested. That, however, did not stop the movement. New leaders like Aruna Asaf Ali came forward. The British government declared the Indian National Congress (INC) to be an unlawful association. The British government arrested More than 1,00,000 people and started using violence to crush the agitation.
Later in 1944, Gandhiji was released for health reasons. The first half of the Quit India movement was peaceful with demonstrations and processions. later, it became violent with raids and setting fire at post offices and government buildings. Quit India campaign was crushed in 1944 as the British refused to allow immediate independence. British indicated that Indian independence could only happen after World War II ended.
