World Sanskrit Day is also known as Vishvasamskritadinam. It is celebrated on Shraavana Poornima, which is the full moon day in the month of Shraavana in the Hindu calendar. This year in 2020, Sanskrit Day falls on Monday, August 3rd.

History of World Sanskrit Day

It is celebrated to promote and revive the ancient India Language – Sanskrit. India started the celebration of World Sanskrit Day in 1969. This day is also known as Sanskrit Diwas.

The Sanskrit language is believed to be originated around 3500 years ago in India and is one of the oldest languages of the world.

Importance of Sanskrit Day

Sanskrit Day is celebrated to spread awareness, promote and revive the ancient India Language. The day essentially speaks of the importance of learning and knowing it. Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages and the first among the ancient languages spoken in India. Sanskrit is the most computer-friendly language.

Sanskrit provides a sense of history and identity. It serves as an affirmation of India’s ethnological unity and cultural cohesiveness.

Sanskrit is a window to India’s grand cultural heritage and must be kept alive so that we may continue exploring and understanding our civilizational roots.
